NURail CoE Summer Interns at Illinois

Three undergraduates from two NURail CoE partners were interns this summer for the Rail Transportation and Engineering Center (RailTEC) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. RailTEC welcomed Brandi Thomas, a rising senior at Tuskegee University, Gary Bonds III, also a rising senior at Tuskegee University, and Matthew Cheruiyot, a rising junior from Morgan State University.

As part of NURail CoE’s mission to educate a new generation of students in railway transportation engineering and provide them with the knowledge to implement these solutions, RailTEC decided to offer summer internships to students from NURail CoE partner institutions. After applying and interviewing for the job, Brandi, Gary and Matthew were offered positions, with Brandi and Matthew even passing up other opportunities for the chance to work at RailTEC. 

All three students have been impressed with Illinois including the facilities available, the modern technology and the overall atmosphere. They also agree they like the communal research setting.

“Everyone here is so kind and knowledgeable. I really appreciate the way the program is run and the way everyone knows what they need to do and how to do it. It’s impressive.” Brandi said. She also mentioned that the most interesting thing she learned was about track buckling and how important maintenance is.

This summer Brandi’s work included analyzing railroad maintenance data and conducting hands-on testing for torsional resistance research. She also developed a CAD model of the torsional resistance test setup to support future finite element method (FEM) analysis under the guidance of Kaifeng Hu, a RailTEC Ph.D. student. Because of her summer internship Brandi is thinking about a career in rail now, but as an aerospace science engineering major she is torn because “propulsion is also very interesting.”

Gary worked with RailTEC Ph.D. student Kamyar Kosameshan analyzing BNSF railroad tight rail event data, building a Python-based pipeline that combines weather data with rail track data to study seasonal trends and derailment risk. He also developed and refined a linearized energy balance model to predict rail temperature, which is a key factor in preventing rail buckling.

Graduating next year with a degree in aerospace science engineering, Gary will follow his family’s tradition with a future in the Air Force. According to Gary, “This internship gave me hands-on experience turning messy, real-world data into something that could actually help prevent rail failures — that’s been the most rewarding part.” 

Spending the summer working with Ph.D. student Jose Gustavo Ramos, Matthew analyzed track images taken with a drone and identified points of interest (anchors, crossties and rail marks), so it can be determined how these features moved over time. “Rail neural temperature is a magical thing,” Matthew said. “I also enjoyed going out on the track, but not the time of day we had to get up.”  

Jose Gustavo said, “Having Matthew here has been a great help for our group. Since the first day he has shown a lot of enthusiasm and interest about railroads and the specific work we are conducting. With good questions and smart work he has been helping on our data collection to better understand the longitudinal behavior of the track.”

As for Matthew’s future he hopes to have a career in rail, but hasn’t decided on what aspect. “Right now everything seems interesting”, he said. 

In addition to their research responsibilities this summer the interns were also able to attend the 8th International Crosstie and Fastening System Symposium where they made industry contacts and learned about collaboration on design and performance challenges and solutions for crossties and fastening systems.

Now Available Second Annual Report

The second annual report published by the National University Rail Center of Excellence (NURail CoE) is now available. This 20-page report details the transportation research, education and workforce development, technology transfer activities, and overall accomplishments of the center from 2 May 2025 – 1 May 2026.

Included in the document is a table listing all projects and their completion status, a two-page spread listing all NURail CoE supported students, a facts and figures infographic, and a spotlight page on each of the nine partner universities detailing one of their research projects and introducing one of their students.

NURail CoE Third Annual Meeting

NURail CoE attendees of the third annual meeting and the INNOVARail conference

The third annual meeting for the National University Rail Center of Excellence (NURail CoE) was held on Tuesday 26 May 2026 at the iHotel and Conference Center on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus. Over 40 representatives from eight of the nine consortium members attended the meeting in person while additional participants attended remotely.

Attendees took the time to review accomplishments from year two, received an update from each of the CoE Principal Investigators including highlights from the prior year and plans for next year, and finalized plans for the NURail CoE booth at the AREMA annual conference in Kansas City in September. The NURail CoE meeting was held in conjunction with the inaugural INNOVARail 2026 conference, a new multidisciplinary conference dedicated to rail research, technology, and development. The INNOVARail conference was held on 26-28 May and the theme was “Translating Innovation into Practice”. There were 33 NURail CoE presentations given at the conference.

NURail CoE Director Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

NURail CoE Director, Dr. Christopher P.L. Barkan, was the 2026 recipient of the Worth Award for Lifetime Achievement. The Worth Award is given to someone who has made a lasting impact on operations, practices, and/or safety in the railway industry over their career and has shared their experience and knowledge with the industry. It is named for Art Worth, the former Manager of Standards and Senior Manager of Advanced Technology at Canadian National. Wheel Rail Seminars, which established the Worth Award, presented this honor to Dr. Barkan and recognized his lasting impact of bridging the gap between academia and the private sector through applied research that addresses real-world railroad challenges with vision and practical timing. As a dedicated mentor, he oversees graduate research with an emphasis on professional standards, ensuring a new generation of engineers is prepared to advance the industry through a comprehensive systems-based approach.

This award is presented annually at the Wheel Rail Interaction (WRI) conference which was held this year on 22-24 April 2026 in Dallas, TX.  NURail CoE was a Presenting Sponsor for the Principles Course on the first day of the conference and J. Riley Edwards, NURail COE Senior Associate Director, presented Session 1: Track Structures and Components of the Principles Course.

NURail CoE Highlighted in RT&S Magazine

NURail CoE was highlighted in the March 2026 issue of Railway Track & Structures (RT&S) magazine in an article on railway engineering education. The piece discusses the outflow of experienced rail engineering practitioners due to retirement and attrition and the fact that young railroad engineers are surprised to discover that the rail industry uses some of the most complex and cutting-edge technology and methods in any industry (including AI). 2026 Principles of Wheel/Rail Interaction Course

The National University Rail Center for Excellence (NURail CoE) is proud to announce that they are once again a Presenting Sponsor for the 2026 Principles of Wheel/Rail Interaction Course. This course will take place on 22 April 2026, one day prior to the 31st Annual Wheel Rail Interaction (WRI) Heavy Haul Conference, in Dallas, TX. NURail CoE Senior Associate Director J. Riley Edwards from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will be one of the Principles Course speakers. Click here to register.

For 2026 the Principles of Wheel/Rail Interaction course has been revitalized and reimagined with a tighter focus on the practical aspects of wheel/rail and vehicle/track interaction. The course will begin with a case study of an actual wheel/rail interaction-related derailment. Next, presenters will cover the fundamental aspects of track, vehicle suspension systems, damage mechanisms and measurements systems but will also connect the dots between theory and what actually happens in the field. Finally, a wrap-up session will review the causes attributed to the case study derailment in light of the principles examined throughout the course and attendees will look at approaches that can be taken to mitigate wheel/rail- and vehicle/track-related derailments in the future.

NURail CoE Sponsors Big Data Conference

NURail CoE recently sponsored the Big Data Conference on 10-11 December 2025 at the University of Delaware. The theme of the conference was “Converting the Mountain of Data Collected by Railway Systems into Effective Maintenance Planning Information with a Focus on Railway Needs and Practical Applications”. Three NURail CoE partners presented research during the conference, including the University of Delaware, Rutgers University, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. These presentations were:

  • Johnson Chukwu and Joseph Palese, University of Delaware, “Development of a Risk Based Track Geometry Inspection Model for Optimizing Inspection Intervals”

The 2025 conference expanded on previous years’ conferences and introduced new and emerging analysis techniques to show how they can be applied to the large volume of inspection and operational data collected by railways to improve their planning of the critical capital and maintenance programs.

Good Showing at Rail Research Week

Six of the NURail CoE partner universities had representatives that attended Rail Research Week on 17-21 November 2025, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They were:

  • Kansas State University
  • Michigan Technological University
  • Rutgers University
  • University of Texas at Austin

The theme for the week was “Inspiring innovative and resilient railways.”  NURail CoE’s 27 presentations and seven session chairs were part of the 700 individual peer-reviewed sessions and papers at the joint conference. This week featured two of the leading preeminent global rail events, the 13th International Heavy Haul Association Conference (IHHA 2025) and the 14th World Congress on Railway Research (WCRR 2025). This collaboration brought together leading minds in freight and passenger rail from around the world, tackling the pressing challenges facing the rail industry today and in the future.

2025 AREMA Conference

Students and faculty from National University Rail Center of Excellence (NURail CoE) partner universities attended the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) 2025 Annual Conference & Expo on 14-17 September at the Indianapolis Convention Center in Indianapolis, IN.

One NURail CoE graduate student from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign (UIUC), Coleman Froehlke, gave a presentation in the Track Technical Session on Tuesday, 16 September on his research titled “Identifying Frozen Ballast and the Impact it has on Rail Gaps – A Laboratory and Numerical Study”.

A special conference track geared towards students included an exclusive tour with the Indiana Railroad, a young industry professionals panel discussion, a students-only networking reception with industry representatives, and a collegiate quiz bowl. The two NURail CoE student teams from UIUC took first and third places in the student quiz bowl competition.

In addition to attending conference sessions, NURail CoE had a booth in the exhibit hall where students were asked to volunteer their time. This gave them an outstanding opportunity to network with industry professionals and to tell them about NURail CoE’s mission to develop solutions that will lead to a safer, more efficient, and reliable passenger and freight rail transportation system in the United States. The next AREMA annual conference will be held 13-16 September 2026 in Kansas City, MO.

NURail CoE Second Annual Meeting

The second annual meeting for the National University Rail Center of Excellence (NURail CoE) was held on Tuesday 12 August 2025 at the University of Notre Dame. Attendees took the time to review accomplishments from year one, receive an update from each of the CoE Principal Investigators including highlights from the prior year and plans for next year, listen to student poster rehearsals, finalize plans for the AREMA conference and discuss a funding reauthorization update. Approximately 30 members attended the meeting either in person or remotely.

The NURail CoE annual meeting was held in conjunction with the Midwest Rail Conference (MRC) which was held on 12-14 August 2025. The theme of the conference was “Railroads 200 Years – Learning from the Past, Shaping the Future”. Wednesday 13 August 2025 consisted of a full day of educational and breakout sessions while Thursday was reserved for field visits including Elkhart Yard and Shipper visits, South Bend Grade Separations and Airport Passenger Rail Station Relocation.

MRC brought together industry leaders, advocacy groups, academia and state organizations to discuss key issues shaping the region’s extensive rail network. Covering freight and passenger rail across states like Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin, the conference explored a diverse range of topics, mixing speakers across stakeholder groups.
